MITAHATO VILLAGE VISIT
About This Event
In March, the French club organized an educational visit to Mitahato village in Kiambu County,
where residents have taken the commendable initiative to become Kenya's first French-speaking
village. Upon arriving, we received a warm karibu from the villagers who were excited to host
university students interested in their unique cultural endeavor.
We toured the village's French library which contains an impressive collection of French books
across genres like fiction, poetry, cookbooks and children's stories. The library manager, Mr.
Josphat Njihia, explained how the library has been instrumental in facilitating the village's French
language education efforts, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools were closed.
Our highlight was interacting with the village children who proudly showcased their French skills
through songs, poems and conversational introductions. Club members joined in the fun by
teaching basic French phrases and vocabulary. The children's enthusiasm was infectious and
reminded us why promoting language learning is so rewarding. We left inspired by the villagers'
dedication to embrace a new culture and language.
